The e-textile toolbox has been developed in a project co-financed by the European Commissions EuropeAid ASI@ITC program. ASI@ITC aims at improving the co-operation between Asia and Europe in the identification and implementation of information-technology solutions. Leading European and Asian organisations in the field of eco-efficient production and the textile sector have put together their expertise to develop this innovative toolbox for efficient textile production. Organisations partnering in this project are: the Indian National Cleaner Production Centre, Vietnam Cleaner Production Centre, BECO Group and UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Energy and Environment (project management). An independent expert board representing local business, sectoral organisations and suppliers as well as retailers from world markets has been a key to the development of the toolbox.

Taking into account the global structure of today's textile production, the e-textile toolbox aims at improvements towards a more efficient and cleaner textile industry. With increasing worldwide competition and stricter regulations as well as increasing labour, raw material and energy costs, improving the efficiency of textile production is becoming a matter of survival. Shortages on key production factors such as water and increasing quality demands from customers already affect your company and will only become more prevalent. While focusing on production processes located in Asia, the tool also allows for improvements along the supply chain and thus is of benefit for retailers and brands and ultimately the consumer.

Specifically developed for the textile sector, the e-textile toolbox will help to:

  • reduce production costs,
  • increase efficiency and productivity,
  • improve quality and environmental performance to meet the standards of export markets,
  • measure and benchmark performance.

tools

www.e-textile.org provides a wide range of useful, informative and sector-specific features, such as sector benchmarks, success stories, tips for action, links and contacts. The uniqueness of e-textile comes from three core tools, described below:

e-learning

Build up the knowledge required to boost your efficiency and meet your customers expectations. Learn e.g. about the business case of cleaner production/eco-efficiency, the features of an environmental management system or textile processing. Examples demonstrate the relevance for the Asian textile sector.

e-efficiency

Introduce performance measures and management approaches in 12 steps to improve your company's efficiency. Building upon each other, each step will tackle a specific improvement area or management issue, such as water and energy consumption or risk management. Within each step, you will systematically identify cost- and eco-efficient improvement options and be able to benchmark your performance.

e-solutions

Looking for successful efficiency improvement solutions? A database containing more than 200 efficiency measures allows you to identify the best available technologies for the specific challenges your company is facing. Searchable by keywords (e.g. liquor ratio), by process steps (e.g. wet-processing) as well as by environmental issue (e.g. waste), you will find the cost-reducing solution suitable for your company in a few seconds.

target groups

The freely accessible toolbox has been specifically designed for technical and managerial staff of textile companies. Also, for sectoral organisations and consultancies the toolbox provides an innovative approach to work with businesses. Outreach activities including knowledge exchange workshops and pilot application in textile SMEs will be initiated by the National Cleaner Production Centres of India and Vietnam.
