The Wuppertal Institute (WI) is the first major institute in Germany systematically addressing not only the global ecological challenges but also the complex tasks involved in the structural change necessary to meet a sustainable development. The WI was conceived as a body that links research, business and public policy in an applied manner, to support the necessary transition towards sustainable structures scientifically, politically and practically.
The e-textile toolbox is managed by the "Sustainable Production and Consumption" department at the WI. Being one of four departments at the institute, it addresses sustainability challenges and opportunities along global product chains from a life-cycle wide perspective. As one activity in this field, the department carries out sustainability assessments along globalised product chains, focusing on understanding the sustainability performance of different life-cycle stages as well as the dependency and influence on the performance of the various actors involved. Results are than taken forward to develop practical tools and methods to enable the actors improving the sustainability performance along the entire chain.
