Section 5 - Material Consumption
Wasteful consumption of raw materials can appear at every stage along the textile production chain. Four main losses are most common: the loss of fibres before they are spun into yarns, the yarn loss in the weaving sector, the loss in garment manufacturing through the inaccurate usage of pre-cut parts and the wastage of chemicals during textile processing. Those material-losses are often caused by bad house keeping and are going to be detected in this section.

Your benefits
By reviewing your material use you can find out how you deal with materials and identify areas where you can reduce their amount. Different management options are presented in this section to give you an idea how to improve your material performance. Substitution opportunities for materials used might exist that can help improve your environmental performance. Cost reductions cannot only result from less purchasing or substitution, also from fewer disposals. Use this section in order to improve your material efficiency.

This section will support you to

  • examine the material use of your processing and other company activities
  • analyse how you can reduce your material use and costs, e.g. through substitution of materials
  • gather data for a performance report and set a benchmark from which you can measure your progress in the future
  • determine which opportunities are most efficient and therefore best for implementation
