Section 7 - Waste Streams
Inputs that are not turned into products are called as non-products and thus wasted inputs. Your company generates three types of waste streams, namely liquid waste (called wastewater), solid waste and gaseous waste (called emissions to air). These Non-Product Outputs (NPOs) do not only create costs for disposal or treatment. Besides these usually fairly small costs, the higher costs occur during the procurement of materials and especially during processing. Considering this, the true cost of non-product output easily amounts up to several times the disposal costs.
Your benefits
Analysing and identifying your NPOs is a basic requirement to integrate the different waste streams in your efficiency improvement strategy. In a structured way, you will identify your Non-Product Outputs (NPOs), calculate their associated costs, and find improvement options to reduce both, the costs associated with them as well as environmental impacts. Minimising your waste streams will also help you complying with regulations and meeting external expectations.

This section will support you to
- identify how much NPOs are generated and where they originate from
- get an idea about the true costs and saving potentials of NPOs
- gather data for a performance report and set a benchmark from which you can measure your progress in the future
- analyse how you can reduce the wastewater, emissions to air and solid waste
- determine which opportunities are most efficient to reduce NPOs and take action
